Toll's End was like heaven. Never mind that there were white deer running around there. I was there for about 5 years - a wonderful memory. The Schleese is well worth it and when their fitters travel they bring used saddles you may want to consider. They also will be at the equine affair. If you are really interested maybe we can figure out a way you can borrow mine. Its a good style and won't pinch their shoulders.

Karen, I am going to make you feel like its a even smaller world. Erika knows me. I used to board my Morgan "Fancy" at Toll's End in Wrentham where we both were. A few years ago I visited Coursebrook as a person boarding there was interested in leasing Duke. I fell in love with the place. The person was really nice but I wanted him to be in a regular training situation and at that time Erika wasn't there. Best of luck with your new Canadian, you should find this breed strong and sturdy in so many ways, body and mind. I hope you will consider competing for the training level all breed medal next year, I would be glad to explain all the steps and cheer you on.

Oh, and yes, I like Beland as well, brings back memories. ...So I would love to encourage any other dressage riders when they are ready to get our horses out there at recognized shows and compete for the medals.

The Canadian Breed Association became USDF members last year at my request so that we could help promote the breed in the dressage discipline and compete for the USDF all breed medals. The info is all their on the USDF website, believe me, it wasn't easy, the association had to vote this in and then it was hard work to get the USDF process completed in time for the 2008 year. You will see all the registered Canadians listed and their show records for this year. We have done NEDA Spring, GMHA Spring, both UNH shows, and Beland this year. We have a few challenges we are working on but despite Duke has received very nice comments and ribboned in every class but one. Its been hard work but last year he was the first Canadian to ever receive the gold medal and was in the 2008 USDF yearbook. If you are competing or planning on competing at recognized shows I would be more than happy to help explain the whole process. Are you at Coursebrook? That facility has wonderful karma but I heard the owner passed away recently and am sad, he had a piece of heaven here on earth. BTW, Schleese makes the best saddle for fit for a Canadian, its trees are all adjustable, which as your horse muscles up, sometimes the fit will need adjusting.

Well the Passier didn't fit- It turned out it was the GG Extra which is a wider tree than the regular. The flaps were super long even though they were the shorter ones. It is expensive and I think it would be hard to find my size and flap size used. The Frank Baines was a REVELATION! I had no idea you could be that comfortable riding dressage. It fit my short legs really nicely. Milou seemed to love it and set off at a brisk springy trot and when I tested how he could feel my leg he ended up doing zig zag half passes!!. I ran through our first level test and I even got some extension! I am going to try the same saddle at Pelham Saddlery in the regular leather to see if I really like the more expensive Buffalo and Nubuck better. We are doing the Hitching Post Farm Schooling horse trials on Oct 10 at the Beginner Novice Level. We're also going to the CVDA schooling show at GMHA on Sept 27.

Hey Karen- I just got back from Trumbull Mountain Saddlery with 2 test saddles in my trunk. A Frank Baines Capriole and a Passier Grand Gilbert. I took along some wither tracings and they determined that Milou is a Medium Wide tree- I bought a new gullet bar for the WIntec- THe white bar is in fact the Extra Wide. THe Frank Baines was a name I had never heard of but it is comfy like a couch!!! and beautifully made in Buffalo with nubuck seat and knee rolls. It is a name I have never heard of but I did a little research tonight on the net and found out that he is an award winning British saddle maker from the same town that my AP saddle (an Ideal) came from. They get rave reviews for quality and fit and come in lots of different sizes. Raydar will probably develop some more so I agree about holding off for a while. I am so pleased to hear that he is coming along so well. A great idea to bring him to a schooling show. I think you will be surprised that he takes it all in stride. My boy has been showing since he was 5 (back then with his previous owner who was 16 he competed in Beginner Novice sanctioned eventing and won or places in everything) Im glad you are gettingout on the trails- My boy is great in a group in the woods but this Spring he spooked and bolted badly down a mountain road with me clinging to his neck when I took him out one day ( I used to go out a lot by myself with him) God luck and keep in touch.Debbie

Hi Karen- You know I never got a notice that you had replied to my note back in June - I just found the "wall" seciton of my member page and there are all these posts on it. In reply to your question about dressage saddles I ride Milou in a Wintec Pro synthetic saddle with a wide gullet bar in . It fits him fine but I don't love it. It was all I could afford at the time. You might look into Duett saddled. You can look at Trumbull Mountain Tack's website. They have detailed fitting instructions and good real world descriptions of the saddles. The Duetts are made for Haflingers and other "drafty" type horses. The prices are also good. We did well at the USDF show in June coming in 3rd in Training Test 3 and 8th in Training 4 with scores of 62.4 and 63.7 respectively- The person who one the training 4 test had a score in the seventies! We won at a Hitching Post Farm schooling horse trials this Summer with a dressage score of 28 (yipee!) and going through the @#$$$! water on the first try. I hope to go to the CVDA (central Vermont Dressage Association) schooling show at the end of September and try a 1st level test. How is Raydar coming along?
